pele2?

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

pele2 is apparently a dutch midget (maybe a dwarf?) rapper. i was walking through nieuwmarkt on my way to central station to sort out my train ticket and his van was there with him performing. his website appears to only be in dutch. i think his tour may consist of driving around in the van and doing random performances with his dancer(s). i suppose this is where someone could use some pantu-tanosimi girls.

the video is in ogg theora format. the only patent-unencumbered reasonable codec. learn it, love it. you shouldn’t have any problems playing it assuming you have vlc installed. it’s 8 megabytes.

i couldn’t get the video to upload so maybe they have some on his website. maybe i’ll get it up later.

musical wasteland

i forgot to mention this. at some point in the past 5 days i went to try and find the phish live cd from the 1995 new year’s eve show at madison square gardens. which i went to. supposedly, it’s one of the top 5 concerts of all time. anyway, i went down to the n1 centre to h.m.v. (big chain music store) since there doesn’t appear to be any independent cd stores in the neighborhood (flashback has used cds, but no phish. there are 2 vinyl stores within a block of my place though. weird). anyway, i don’t find any in the rack and so i asked this guy that worked there. looked like he might have even been a manager type. “do you have any phish?”. “aren’t they usually in an aquarium?”. i didn’t laugh. he then starts asking what type of music etc. so he walks over to the ‘f’ section. i inform him that no, it’s spelled with a ‘ph’. after not finding anything, like i didn’t, he asks this other girl who also hasn’t heard of them. am i in a music store? at some point i had informed him they were an american band. didn’t help. i asked if they had an ‘imports’ section. he said no. really a stupid question since if they did everything in the store would be in it except the beatles, rolling stones, led zepplin, oasis and tom jones (assuming an ‘import’ is outside the uk and not england). he offered to order it, but i gave up and left.

so, i went right next door to the book, music, dvd store. i can’t remember the name, but it’s a chain that’s all over the place as well. they had 1 copy on junta. there first cd from over a decade ago.

i guess i’ll have to remember to get it when i get back.

about last night…

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

i went with loic (the frenchman flatmate), his co-worker yannis (swedish) and 2 of his swedish friends to some mediterranean restaurant last night. it was decent. it had a family run sort of feel. it was also apparently some girl’s birthday (turns out 3 girls) so the staff organized a singing of “happy birthday”. i wonder if they got performance rights clearance for that? of course, after singing, he turned on the music and coerced them to dance. the original girl even got up on her chair. she clearly didn’t have a problem with the situation. it was marginally entertaining. i should have taken my camera.

after eating, we went down to meet another of yannis’ swedish friends (some girl who has apparently just moved here.) and went to o’neill’s. it’s an irish chain pub. there was a decent amount of people in there even with it costing p4 to get in. that’s a little unusual since i haven’t seen any other pubs charging for entry. of course, this was more a bar than a pub since there was a dance floor and incredibly loud music (mostly older american pop crap). they did have a techo-remix of “hey baby” (the original was by bruce channel. . it’s interesting that none of the pages listing the lyrics for the “new” version reference the original author.)

yannis’ 2 swedish friends are in town to see covenant. a swedish electro-pop band apparently similar to kraftwerk. how can you not check out a band reviewed by a site called “vampire magazine”? surely it won’t be sold out on a sunday?
it wasn’t terribly exciting. the area around upper street in islington is fairly busy on the weekends. it’s also been good weather (i think the high over that past 2 days was 73f) the past couple of days so all the restaurants have the fronts open and seats outside. today it’s raining. hopefully, it will be a nice day tomorrow for the final premier league matches.

here’s 2 interesting links that were posted to slashdot.

improv everywhere at best buy. a bunch of people got similar looking clothes to the best buy employees and then filled the store. of course, the real best buy managers start freaking out.

babybot: a one armed robot that learns to interact with objects on the table in front of it. it does seem like the best way forward towards better robots would be simple systems that can learn. the advantage over a human is that once you’ve taught one, you can easily duplicate it.

i have setup liferea, a rss feed reader for linux. it seems like a better way to interact with the daily news sites and blogs. i know this isn’t anything earth shattering since these types of apps have been around for quite some time now. it’s really only good if they post the text of the articles in the feed. maybe this will actually lead to me reading joe’s blog more consistently. there’s obviously feed readers for other platforms, but i wouldn’t know.

i’m sure it’s bad form to slam a bunch of non-related things into a single blog post, but i really don’t care.

maybe i should take the opportunity of this gloomy day to fill in some of the tech posts i’ve been queueing. still haven’t sorted out where to stay in manchester. i did find this “helpful” site. it’s not looking good. maybe i should just go to liverpool and take a short train ride for the match. it probably would have been a good idea to find that site right after i got the ticket. oh well.

update: great, 25,000 celtic fans traveling to the match isn’t a good sign. i guess that’s why all the hotels seem to be booked. looks like it’s near by city or winging it and hope for some crap hotel that doesn’t do internet reservations.

speaking of misogyny…

one of my flatmates left the radio on in the kitchen. i don’t ever listen to music on the radio. ludicrous’, sorry ludarcris’ (i forgot he can’t spell his own name) “move bitch” (obviously i don’t listen to the radio since this came out in 2001. not that they played the unedited version in the u.s. anyway. i bet that was good for a laugh) came on. here’s the lyrics. obviously, i don’t have a problem with profanity. i have been behind somebody in a car and wished they would move. i’m sure i’ve even yelled “move bitch!” at some point (appropriately modified if it’s not a woman). but really, what is the point of this song? i know all the free speech arguments (turn it off, you don’t have to listen, yada yada). i’m just asking why? i’m not sure what art is, but i’m fairly certain this is not it. it definitely doesn’t pass moose’s extremely liberal definition. of course, the record companies don’t care. they’re just in it for the money (and so is pepsi). which, other than getting exposure by being an ass and a danger to people on the road (actively promoting d.u.i. and starting fights) why would someone buy this?

i’m not saying you need to sing about flowers or some other bullshit, but could you at least have a point? i guess what i’ve heard most quoted from women about rap is that they don’t listen to the lyrics they just like to dance. i’m sure they’re giggling and twirling their hair as they say it too.

this is more than the song’s worth.

btw, is it any wonder nobody cares when the record companies complain about copyright infringement by downloaders? they screw (in more ways than this) the exact “artists” (so they tell me) they’re claiming to protect.

so, if you slap the hand, you have to give a pat on the back. bush is at least making some attempt (alterior motives? still trust issues) to turn things around. removing $2 billion in tax breaks for oil companies reporting record profits would seem like a no brainer. although, he can’t actually do it, congress has to. maybe it’s a start. there’s some more today with congress getting oil companies tax records. how is this going to get prices to drop? it’s not. it may end up making the oil companies look bad, but it’s not going to do anything else. the only way prices will go down is if supply increases (not going to happen) or demand decrease. poor city planning and urban sprawl are part of the problem. even with gas at $3/gallon that’s still not really significant enough for people to change their ways.

on a musical note (man that’s bad), it’s good to see some musicians actually standing up for themselves. even if they are only canadian.

interesting english world cup blog. indeed, where is that u.s. world cup song?

one computer bit. after installing the new ubuntu i started seeing weird problems with random scrolling in firefox. it turns out that it’s because they enabled the scroll strip on the touch pad. how annoying. who ever though it was a good idea to integrated it right in the same surface? i’m constantly accidentally setting it off. i guess i’ll have to figure out how to turn it off now.
