movie review: “the da vinci code”

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

i went to see it yesterday. i think i would give it a generous 3 out of 5. not surprisingly, it’s no where as good as the book. more so than the normal book->movie loss in translation.
there were 2 big annoyances for me. the continous bashing over the head by tom hanks/robert langdon that these are “myths” and “if you believe that sort of stuff” comments. this wasn’t in the book. it seems a bit like playing to the christian complainers. the big changes to the ending were the other problem. it’s almost as if they were shooting in chronological order (would be unusual if they did) and got to the end and said, “oh shit! this is 2.5 hours long. we have to rip some stuff out.”. there are other differences that are listed on the wikipedia page for the movie. ian mckellen was the best performance of the bunch. everyone else (aside from paul bettany as silas) seemed like they were talking to the camera/audience. the script generally seems to have not been that good. definitely not up to the level of what you normally expect from ron howard.
you might want to rent it, but i wouldn’t bother going to the theater.

then there’s the whole controversy and complaining from christian groups (and the albinos). i don’t really want to get into this, but here’s an interesting article, particulary ian mckellen’s quote. my main problem with all of this type of stuff is that these types of responses (the article, not mckellen) claim to be “preaching” the “truth” and “authority of the bible”. it’s interesting that they’re apparently wanting to hold these high standards of “truth” for the da vinci code, but don’t seem to apply that to their own beliefs.

like all fiction books/movies, it’s based on fact and fiction. i suspect that the reason this stuff has gotten so blown out of proportion is that as conspiracy theory-esque as the stuff in the book/movie is, it’s actually sounds more reasonable that the assumed “truth” in the bible. it’s very difficult to have scientific evidence when scientists didn’t even exist.

the major question is “does god exist?”. for me, the question is totally irrelevant. i will behave the same way regardless if he/she/it does or does not exist.

just some links

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

i really don’t like just posting a bunch of links, but oh well.

the internation fusion project (i.t.e.r.) is going forward. i really think this guy is wrong.

EU science and research commissioner Janez Potocnik said: “We represent more than half of the world’s population, and recognise that by working together today we stand a much better chance of tackling the challenges of tomorrow, so energy is an issue of concern for all of us.”

working together doesn’t get you there faster. if you really want to get somewhere, nothing’s better than a little international rivalry. think spacerace. they’ve already spent some amount of time just arguing over which country it would be built in.

you really  have to miss clint mathis. who will carry the torch this year?

i wonder if the pringles can in this commercial was cgi?

this is funny in a bad way.

yeah, i realize those are all from who ate all the bratwurst, but how would i know if you had already seen them?

btw, after a week or so, i would have to say that using a rss reader is indispensible. you can get through more sights quickly. then i have to sit there wondering what to do. highly recommended. of course, it makes it easier to notice how much overlap there is between tech sites.

movie review: “once in a lifetime: the extraordinary story of the new york cosmos”

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

this movie, not surprisingly, is about the new york cosmos in the ’70s and ’80s. it was good and contained a lot of things i didn’t know. what is a bit surprising is that a movie about an american soccer team opened in the u.k. before it opens in the america (july 7th). it’s interesting that the cosmos were funded by warner communications under the head of steve ross during their hey-day. while i don’t think the premier league will collapse, there would seem to be similarities with chelsea and even real madrid. however, a big difference for the cosmos was that warner and ross also viewed it as a marketing tool for warner music and movies. ross still did want to just own a winning sports team though.

whatever, it’s good. go see it.

the movie was showing at the screen on the green (beware! crap website even without using flash) which is a small theater chain. it’s an older theater. small-ish screen. odd seats that seemed comfortable at first, but were less so as the movie went on. there was also a mildewy, old place smell. to top it all off, there was 18 minutes of ads and trailers before the movie started. i’m not sure when they started exactly, but i’m measuring based on scheduled start time. i just can’t figure out why fewer people are supposedly going to the theater? what a difficult mystery. 20 minutes of wasted time, high ticket prices, a lot of crap movies, better viewing experiences at home.

whatever.

gllug social meeting

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

i went to a gllug (greater london linux users group) social meeting last night at chimes of pimlico. marginally interesting. i was able to put the “drinking to make people more interesting” theory into affect. it appears to work. although, they didn’t seem to be that bad anyway. 5 of the 9 (that i know) were not from london and 4 of those were not from england. we were actually sitting at a table and eating. i was able to get to try real english mead (fermented honey). it’s very sweet. smells a lot worse than it tastes. it kind of spoiled it for me that it was in something similar to a wine bottle. i always associate mead with an image of burly medieval fat guys drinking from a ceramic jug with wood or metal mugs. maybe that’s just me. i also tried apple and pear cidars. less sweet. the apple was better.

i had grilled halibut. it was ok. i think i should have gone for the lamb shank with mash. it looked much better.
i’ve got to start learning to pick my seats more carefully.

thursday i’m going to a presentation meeting they’re having which will have a company called filmlight talking about how they use linux for a video cluster architecture for film grading or something.

10 signs that America will pay attention to the World Cup

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

i don’t really have anything to say. i just thought the post was mildly interesting. mainstream americans will probably start caring when we get to the final. if it doesn’t appear we even have a chance of winning, they don’t care. constrast to this world cup stories thing on the bbc last night about france where some french guy was saying that they expect to be second place. americans appear to expect to be 1st at all times.
